Kea, also known as Tzia, is one of the most representative cycladic islands, as it has preserved marvelously its Aegean character.
Kea is connected with the seaport of Lavrion. You can reach Lavrion by car throught Attiki odos or else throught Posidonos avenue and Athens-Sounio Route.
Also from the airport El.Venizelos you can find bus from KTEL Attikis with destination the seaport of Lavrion
Kea's seaport, Korissia, is 16 miles away from Lavrion, with which it is connected daily by ferryboat. The trip takes about an hour. Kea also has helicodrome.

A few words about Kea's history.

Kea's first colonizers are thought to be the Arcadians. Aristaios, their leader, was able to provoke Etisies (also known as meltemia: seasonal winds that come from the North in late summer, and are widely known in the Aegean sea) and save the island from the drought, by making sacrifices on Zeus's altar. Aristaios was the first to teach the islanders stock-raising, farming and bee-keeping.

There was a second colonization in 1200, by Locrians. Their leader, Keos from Nafpaktos, gave the island its present name. The Ionic element was to dominate later, with four independent kingdoms-Cities: Karthaia, Ioulida, Korissia and Poiisa.
In 478 BC Kea became part of the Athenian Alliance. In 1204, when the Francs invaded Byzantium, they named the island Zia, which is where the name Tzia comes from. In 1579 the island passes into Turkish hands and after the 1821 revolution it becomes, along with the rest of the Cyclades, part of the free Greek state.
